Pain in the foot can show up in many places, and each one tells a different story. Heel pain may point to plantar fasciitis or a strained ligament. Pain in the ball of the foot could mean a nerve issue, joint inflammation, or overuse from certain activities. If the pain is near the arch, it might relate to flat feet or a tendon problem. Even the toes can be a source of trouble, especially when joints become stiff, irritated, or misshapen. Where the pain begins, how it feels, and when it shows up all help identify the problem. Because feet carry the body every day, even minor discomfort can grow into a bigger issue if ignored. A podiatrist can examine the entire foot, uncover the cause, and offer effective treatment. If your foot pain is not going away, it is suggested that you schedule a visit with a  podiatrist and take the first step toward lasting relief.

  • And more

Diagnosis

To figure out the cause of foot pain, podiatrists utilize several different methods. This can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Painful Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, and swelling. This condition often affects the big toe and is typically caused by improper nail trimming, wearing tight shoes, or injury. Other factors, such as fungal infections or having naturally curved nails, can also contribute to the problem. Symptoms include sharp pain at the edge of the nail, tenderness, swelling, and, in some cases, pus or drainage if an infection develops. The pain may worsen when wearing shoes or walking, making daily activities uncomfortable. A podiatrist can diagnose an ingrown toenail through a physical exam. Treatment may involve gently lifting the nail, or, if necessary, removing part of the nail to relieve pressure. If an infection is present, antibiotics may be prescribed. For recurring cases, a minor procedure to permanently remove the nail or nail root might be recommended. If you have this condition, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for proper treatment.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Mital Patel, DPM of South Shore Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

Prolonged standing at work can lead to ongoing strain on the feet, toes, and ankles, especially when movement is limited. Occupations that require standing in one place for extended periods, such as retail, restaurant, or medical roles, can increase the risk of heel pain, arch fatigue, swollen feet, and joint stiffness. Standing for long periods at work causes pressure to build in the lower limbs, which can affect circulation and muscle function. Foot pain is often worsened by shoes that lack proper support and high heels, which can add extra stress to the forefoot and toes. Over time, this may contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis, bunions, or tendon inflammation. A podiatrist can assess foot structure and gait to determine how prolonged standing is affecting your feet. Treatment may include recommendations for better footwear, the use of custom orthotics to improve foot support, and, in severe cases, surgery to correct structural damage. If you have foot pain from standing at work for long periods of time, it is suggested that you schedule  an appointment with a podiatrist.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact Mital Patel, DPM from South Shore Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.

Hammertoes often begin when there is an imbalance between the muscles and tendons that control toe movement. Over time, this imbalance causes the toe to bend downward at the middle joint, creating a fixed or flexible deformity. Wearing poorly fitting shoes can make the problem worse, especially styles that squeeze the toes or force them into an unnatural position. High arches, flat feet, and certain nerve or joint conditions can also contribute by changing the way pressure is distributed across the foot. As the toe becomes more rigid, it may rub against shoes, leading to corns, calluses, and pain. Early treatment can help prevent progression and may reduce the need for surgery. If you have a toe that is beginning to curl or cause discomfort, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Mital Patel, DPM of South Shore Podiatry. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.

Symptoms

  • Painful and/or difficult toe movement
  • Swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Calluses/Corns
  • Physical deformity

Risk Factors

  • Age – The risk of hammertoe increases with age
  • Sex – Women are more likely to have hammertoe compared to men
  • Toe Length – You are more likely to develop hammertoe if your second toe is longer than your big toe
  • Certain Diseases – Arthritis and diabetes may make you more likely to develop hammertoe

Treatment

If you have hammertoe, you should change into a more comfortable shoe that provides enough room for your toes. Exercises such as picking up marbles may strengthen and stretch your toe muscles. Nevertheless, it is important to seek assistance from a podiatrist in order to determine the severity of your hammertoe and see which treatment option will work best for you.
